About the Journal

The BOLEMA journal is one of the most important publications in the field of mathematics education in Brazil. Mathematics Education can be seen as a field of inquiry that seeks to provide responses to educational phenomena related to mathematics, in a broad sense. Thus, the periodical deals with articles that report on research on topics such as mathematical learning in the classroom or the role of mathematics in society. Although it originated and is based at the State University of São Paulo (UNESP), Rio Claro, BOLEMA has become a national journal with an editorial body and consultants from various places on Brazil and the world. It received a high evaluation from CAPES, the national body that guides the policies of the Ministry of Education regarding graduate study and research.

Mission

The objective is to disseminate scientific knowledge in mathematics education and related fields. The content can include results of empirical research, essays, and other standard forms in this domain of knowledge. In addition, reviews, invited articles, special sessions, and summaries of theses and dissertations complement the journal.

History

Published under this title for the first time in 1985, the BOLEMA journal was born of the initiative of a group of graduate studentsin the Graduate Program in Mathematics Education at UNESP, Rio Claro, associated with the Institute of Geosciences and Exact Sciences and the Department of Mathematics at the same university. The first two issues were circulated in 1985, and the 26 th issue was published in 2006, with no interruption in periodicity since 2000.

Periodicity: Bi-annual.

Instructions for authors

BOLEMA is composed of articles, reviews, summaries, and notices. The manuscripts received are submitted for analysis to members of the journal's Advisory Board. There is no specific deadline for sending articles; they are received and processed on a continuous basis.

Instructions:

1) Syntax, spelling, and bibliography are the authors' responsibility, as well as typographical review for errors; if approved, the article will be published as it was received. It is thus recommended that the text be submitted for review by specialists in the Portuguese and English languages;

2) The content of the signed articles is the exclusive responsibility of the author(s);

3) The manuscripts submitted for publication will be analyzed by members of the journal's Advisory Council as well as the editor or co-editors. After receiving the article, the editor will decide whether he or one of the co-editors will be responsible for the article. The choice of editor and the advisers is always based on consideration of the specific competencies of the reviewers, as well as the absence of conflict of interest;

4) BOLEMA follows the procedure of evaluation by peers, in double-blind, which can result in four situations: i) approval (publication as received), ii) approval with few modifications, iii) re-submission after considerable modifications, iv) rejection (not approved for publication). The result of the evaluation is always communicated to the author(s).

5) The final version of the article (for printing) is re-sent to the author for approval.

6) The authors, following final approval of the article, must sign a term of commitment declaring that the article refers to original research and/or has not been previously published. In the case the article was presented previously in a conference or meeting, the author should communicate this fact to the editor, and the version submitted to BOLEMA should reflect additional theoretical or methodological development.

The following norms should be respected:

Send the manuscript to the Editor on disquette (Word 6.0 or higher for Windows), accompanied by three hard copies, two without identification of the author(s).

Format

The article should not exceed 15 pages and should follow the structure outlined below:

Titles: font Times New Roman, size 16, bold, spaced 1½, centered. The initial letters of the words in the title should be capitalized (except propositions, adverbs, conjunctions, etc), and words following the use of a colon (:) should begin with small letters (except proper names).

Title in English: font Times New Roman, size 14, in bold, spaced 1½, centered. The initial letters of the words in the title should be capitalized (except propositions, adverbs, conjunctions, etc), and words following the use of a colon (:) should begin with small letters (except proper names).

Names of the Author(s): font Times New Roman, size 12, spaced 1½, aligned with the right margin. Capitalized and small letters should be used and footnotes inserted for each author with the title, name of institution, department (if associated with a teaching institution), address for correspondence, and e-mail.

Abstract: The word Abstract should be written in Times New Roman, size 12, in bold, spaced 1½, centered. The abstract of the article should be written in Times New Roman, size 10, single-spaced, justified with the margins without indentation, and should contain 100 to 150 words.

Key words: font Times New Roman, size 10, single-spaced, justified with the margins. The initial letter of the words should be capitalized (except prepositions, adverbs, conjunctions, etc.) and separated by periods.

Subtitles: font Times New Roman, size 12, in bold, spaced 1½, justified with the margins and without numbering the sections. Only the first letter of the subtitle should be capitalized.

References: Follow the current norms of ABNT.

Obs1. In the case that you need to insert a section entitled Bibliography Consulted, you should follow the current norms of the ABNT.
