Phonoaudiology

Technical arsenal for better human communication

Multidisciplinary formation adds competence and psychological and social knowledge

Phonoaudiology studies the development and improvement of human communication, as well as its disturbs and differences in oral, written and gestural modalities.

The issues addressed by the professional of this area are diverse – oral and written languages, speech, fluency, voice, hearing, comprehension, swallowing and collective health, among others. The phonoaudiologist can prevent communication disruptions, evaluate the dysfunctions in this area, elaborate diagnoses and propose means of rehabilitation.

The phonoaudiologists work in the areas of health and education, in private and public sectors. They can also practice teaching, carry out research and perform administrative activities.

Depending on their activity, they may join basic health units, specialized first aid stations, hospitals, maternities, clinics, care homes, health institutions, daycares, nurseries, regular and special schools, superior education institutions, companies, theatres, radio and television.Generally, these specialists work together with doctors, psychologists, dentists, physiotherapists, social assistants and teachers.

The major in Phonoaudiology of the School of Philosophy and Sciences (FFC), in Marília, was created in the 1990s and has been standing out for its wide curricular structure, in which different areas of knowledge are integrated.

The major's main goal is to promote a general and humanist formation, while still developing specific abilities in order to allow the future professional to prevent and diagnose problems, habilitate and rehabilitate patients that show hearing, written and oral communication impairments. All is considered so that, in the exercise of this science, the psychosocial issues are not unaddressed.

The program addresses diversified themes such as biology, genetics, medicine, psychology, linguistics and education. This multidisciplinary approach provides to the students a widened perspective of the profession and their field of work.

Guided by teachers, most of them doctors, the student is encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities like scientific research, internships and projects with the community.Among the places where these activities are held are the Health and Education Studies Center (CEES), basic health units and family health units, pre-schools and care homes. In these activities, the students can win scholarships from institutions that support science or even from the university.

The results of the outside evaluations about the major are excellent. In 2003 it obtained an A in the Provão carried out by MEC and, in 2004's Enade (National Exam of Students Performance), presented the best performance in the state of São Paulo. In 2005 and 2009 the program was granted an A by the outside evaluation of UNESP’s Permanent Evaluation Committee.
