Essential role for the well-being of population

Scientific and community projects provide a solid and humanized foundation to the future of medicine

The foundation of medical teaching focuses on the advance of new and diversified technology of diagnosis and illness treatment. Diseases that not long ago were fatal today are considered chronic diseases, increasing the life expectancy of patients. In addition to the scientific advances, the local programs pay crescent attention to the humanized formation of these professionals, who deal directly with people and their families in moments of extreme physical and emotional fragility.

The doctor’s duty is to serve/ treat most part of the population in a community, regardless of sex and age, emphasizing the most common health problems in that particular group. To do so, they must have solid knowledge on how to promote disease prevention and rehabilitation of the organism. They can work in public institutions of the Unified Health System (SUS), in particular offices, in health care programs and medical cooperatives or choose to form new doctors, dedicating him/herself to teach and do research.

The School of Medicine at UNESP, at the Campus in Botucatu, follows the same parameters as the best world’s schools in this area, getting students involved in research activities and service to the community. This interaction begins right in the first years of the program, when the basic disciplines of the area, like Anatomy and Human Physiology, are taught, The last two years of the program are in regime of internship in various institutions in the region, like the Maternity of the Regional Hospital of Sorocaba, the Center of Health and School of Botucatu, the Basic Health Units of Botucatu, as well as the Clinical Hospital of UNESP and the State Hospital of Bauru, administered by the university. As the work in first aid centers and emergency and urgent care units tend to mark the first years of the career, activities in these areas have been valued in the disciplines in this period of the program.

The School also offers programs of medical residency, with a duration of 3 to 5 years, according to the chosen area. Every year public service exams are offered to doctors from all over the country to join these programs.
For those who wish to continue their studies, the unit offers nine graduate programs, including Master’s and Doctoral degrees, available during the period of medical residency.

The program at UNESP is one of the most disputed in the country. To encourage students of public schools to enter the program, the unit has a preparatory training for students with low income.

Different projects to support the community are also carried out, like the alphabetization program of youngsters and adults through health education. Other activities to promote scientific themes and prevention of epidemics are carried out by the students, under supervision of the professors. Among the examples, the blood donation and eye exam campaigns stand.

Another strong feature of the program is the infrastructure which, in the beginning of 2011, was extended with the inauguration of a complex with almost 6 thousand m² of covered area, including a classroom center, and administrative sector and a Memory and Archive Center.
