Mechanical Engineer

Presence in all areas of industry

In three campuses, theory is applied in lab activity, internship and scientific research

** Double degree

Working in the automotive industry is the major motivation for candidates for mechanical engineers; however, these professionals enter in practically all areas that involve mechanical components. From the design of a simple toy to the development of new materials for the aerospace industry, they are present in the conception, design, manufacture and maintenance of products.

With Brazilian economy growing, the market for mechanical engineers is in expansion. There are very promising prospects in areas such as shipbuilding and rigs due to oil exploration in the pre-salt layer. To be a mechanical engineer, the candidate must have features such as quick thinking, affinity with exact sciences, curiosity, leadership, dedication, perseverance, and the ability to work in groups. The candidate must also be versatile, master at least one foreign language, and possess IT knowledge.

In UNESP, students of Mechanical Engineering develop projects that introduce knowledge gained from years of training in the development of new techniques and technologies. They also have to complete mandatory internships, scientific initiations, and extension activities. There are programs to promote the internationalization of the major, such as performing curricular components in foreign institutions. In Guaratinguetá, for instance, students undertake activities in Germany and France, providing them the possibility of a double degree.

UNESP has three campuses that offer the major. In the Bauru, students have access to 13 teaching labs and 8 research labs. Among them, the Bamboo Experimentation Laboratory develops projects for the application of this material in construction and for other purposes. In the Laboratory of Aircrafts, they can perform tests and trials on resistance of materials and aerodynamics projects. With classes focused on the professional activity, the major enables a career either in the industry or in the development of science and technology.

In Guaratinguetá, students have the opportunity to study in the evening or in the morning and afternoon, relying on several well-equipped labs to carry out their practical activities. The graduation provides a generalist education, with solid knowledge in the areas of projects, materials, energy, and production. A set of auxiliary disciplines complement the education, such as Fundamentals of Law, Computer Programming, Management of Industrial Maintenance, Environmental Sciences, and Occupational Safety and Hygiene.

In the campus located in Ilha Solteira, the Engineering major has a good infrastructure for practical activities; with about 18 teaching laboratories that have been upgraded with the purchase of new equipment by the Programa de Melhoria do Ensino de Graduação. Students also have the opportunity to go on exchange programs through programs such as the double degree, with France, and others, mainly Brafitec and the Ciências Sem Fronteiras, from CAPES.

Students from UNESP can still expand their education by participating in side projects, such as Baja, Formula SAE, the Aerodesign, the Mobilidade and the Grupo de Motores. Graduates may work in the design, development and installation of machinery and equipment and other industrial products: in the design, construction, operation and maintenance of thermal and mechanical systems, industrial facilities, refrigeration, heating and air conditioning systems, as well as in academia and universities.
