The energy issue is currently considered  strategic and fundamental  in the development of nations. In a period when  population is growing at the same time as the demand for resources to meet social, economic, and cultural needs is increasing day by day, the responsible use of those resources is fundamental. 

The lack of resources is being heavily discussed because of the energy crisis faced mostly by European countries.
Since the 1rst United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, which took place at Stockholm in 1972, motivated by an energy crisis, the matter of prospective new energy sources has been significant. From the Earth Summit of 1992, which was held in Rio de Janeiro, those debates have intensified.  The energy issue was directly affected, along with other subjects related to environment preservation, which leads up to the signing of the Kyoto Protocol. Therefore, generating energy in a responsible way, after the massive increase of renewable sources, became a challenge to energy policies of nations, which has brought up the need for a fresh look on the generation, transmission, and use of energy by societies at personal, industrial, and commercial levels.

The diversification of energy sources, especially the renewable ones, is essential for the economic and social development of Brazil, since it should provide the country with more energy, self-sufficiency and a better reputation in the global scenario. 

So, each and every technological innovation that benefits from renewable resources and may improve the energy management of the country holds great importance. As for a prospective scenario, the project entitled Brazil 2022 has diagnosed that the country may suffer from an energy crisis within the next years, one that might be very similar the 2001 crisis.

The whole world will take part in this discussion, and UNESP's contribution will involve knowledge creation and a fresh take on the energy situation. It's also the University's responsibility to invest in the qualification of profession enabled to work in this area, since the energy matter is very significant for the development of the country. Thus the need for an Energy Engineering major that will succeed on training professionals capable of helping the future social, economic, and environmental transformations.

The Energy Engineering major intends to train  professionals with a holistic vision,  able to develop technologies and carry out researches while thinking ahead of their time. Energy engineers must use their techniques and tools so that the political situation, the economy, the culture, and the social scenario are not forgotten or ignored, which will make possible a whole revolution in the production and use of energy and its sources. The Energy Engineering major has all the classes scheduled in the morning and in the afternoon, and the 40 seats are offered at the campus located in the city of Rosana.
