Technical and social development expands professional action

Courses administered with qualified professors, modern laboratories and experimental farms

Agronomy, or Agronomic Engineering, plays a relevant role in a society with a crescent consumption of food, fibers and energy. It also demands environmentally sustainable work practices, especially regarding the issues of water utilization and availability, and conservation of biodiversity.

In Brazil, agricultural properties show heterogeneous characteristics, with specialized business units cohabiting, side by side, with household production units, each of them showing specific technological, economic and social conditions. In this sense, a professional must have a general formation, but with a focus of specialization.

An agronomic engineer can get involve with the various spheres of agricultural production (segments of input production, food production, fibers and energy, transport, processing and commercialization, among others) and in various activities, like irrigation, topography, mechanization, seed processing and storing, soil fertilization and manuring, manipulation and conservation of the soil, vegetable sanitary defense, processing of agricultural products, animal feeding and nutrition, genetic improvement, agricultural business administration, agricultural meteorology, agricultural production of seeds and seedling technology, and biotechnology.

In urban centers, a professional in this area can act in the various segments of agricultural product distribution, in the visual communication for urban planning through landscaping and afforestation, in the banking sector through market of credit and insurances, in provision of services through specialized consulting firms, among others. It is also important to highlight all the job opportunities opened due to the production of renewable energy (ethanol and biodiesel), regarding quality assurance and certification of agricultural products.

The course in Botucatu offers students more than 75 research labs, greenhouses, research and extension centers, library, business incubators, support fund to researches, foreign languages lab and coffee museum. It has three experimental farms and a model grange, where practical experiments are developed under supervision, accompanied by the rural productive reality.

The six graduate level courses offered in this campus aim to encourage research actions while integrating undergraduate students in scientific initiation activities. Also, the Agronomy major at the Agricultural Sciences Faculty offers support for exchange programs, internships and studies in foreign institutions.

In the Ilha Solteira major, the subjects are administered in theoretical and practical lectures, which involve labs, experimental farms and companies (rural, cooperative and multinational properties, among others) with activities related to the subjects. The students are greatly encouraged to pursue projects of scientific initiation. The unit has agreements with various companies and entities for the realization of the supervised mandatory internship.

The major in Jaboticabal has countless labs (for both didactic and research purposes), along with a learning and research farm and a tree farm. Students have open field lectures, visits to the facilities and agricultural properties, along with scientific initiation activities and internships in the university and companies.

Surrounded by Atlantic Forest environmental reserves, but located in an agricultural region of the state, the course in Registro zeals for quality in education, encouraging an entrepreneurial spirit and networking between producers and students, in addition to scientific initiation. It also provides students with the opportunity to study and practice handling and developing of sustainable agriculture, not only in the family scope but also in a larger scale.
